books  & periodicals

You may want to put the history of your school within a larger context, possibly in relation to the history of your community. If so, you might begin by looking at published works, such as books and periodicals.

Start by consulting the bibliography in The Homeroom: British Columbia's History of Education website.  The Homeroom bibliography includes a section on books and articles dealing individual schools, communities, and local school districts.

Another good starting point is a reference work by Linda L. Hale and Jean Barman entitled British Columbia Local Histories: A Bibliography (1991).  This bibliography will provide you with the titles of books that may have focused on your community.  (Usually, local histories contain sections or chapters devoted to local schools.) The British Columbia Local Histories bibliography is accessible on The University of British Columbia Library Online Information Resources page.

Also, don't overlook the memoirs and reminiscences of local pioneers, which often include recollections of the author's schooldays.

You'll need to visit the library in person in order to consult the books you want, but you can identify some of the books beforehand by browsing on-line library catalogues.   The place to start is Outlook Online - The Internet Catalogue of British Columbia's public, college, and institute libraries

The British Columbia Archives' Library Collection may be useful, too. The collection consists of about 70,000 books, pamphlets, and other printed materials. A portion of the collection (about 12,000 items catalogued between the mid 1980s and the mid 1990s) is described in an on-line catalogue. A significant number of the items relate to provincial schools and educational systems.

After you've consulted books and periodicals, you might want to check out the back editions of newspapers.
