Curriculum guides — or, as they were officially known, Programmes of Study — provide a wealth of information on the public schools of British Columbia from 1914 to 1969. Not only do these records provide details about curricula content and classroom activities; they also offer insights into the philosophies and practices of contemporary educators and administrators.
Curriculum guides issued between 1914 and 1949 and from 1960 to 1969 are itemized below. [A listing for the 1950s is in progress]. Titles listed with a UBC item number are available on microfilm in the Curriculum Library at The University of British Columbia and in the libraries of other provincial universities and university-colleges. Microfilm copies are also available in the Reference Room of the British Columbia Archives.
To identify microfilm copies of the Curriculum Guides, consult the Microfilm reel/item list.
Guides that are not listed with a UBC item number are available in hard-copy at the British Columbia Archives. They are part of the Archives' Northwest [library] Collection and are catalogued as: British Columbia. Ministry of Education. Inventory of Curriculum Guides, 1914-1980.
When requesting Guides from the Northwest Collection, researchers should cite the call number -- NW971.58 B863 -- and the BCA item number [provided on the inventory lists below].
