On 5 December 1978 the Ministry of Education was renamed Ministry of Education, Science and Technology.

On 24 November 1979 a new ministry -- the Ministry of Universities, Science and Communications -- was established. Dr. Pat McGeer was responsible for the new ministry. The Ministry of Education, Science and Technology was renamed Ministry of Education. The Education portfolio was assigned to Brian R. D. Smith.

On 15 September 1993 the Ministry of Education was renamed Ministry of Education, Skills and Training.

On 15 February 1998 the Ministry of Education, Skills and Training was disestablished and two separate ministries were established -- the Ministry of Education (responsible for the K - 12 sector) and the Ministry of Advanced Education, Training and Technology (responsible for post-secondary education). The latter was renamed Ministry of Advanced Education on 5 June 2001. Effective 15 April 2007 it was called the Ministry of Advanced Education and Labour Market Development. It was re-organized and renamed the Ministry of Science and Universities on 25 October 2010. The new ministry jettisoned provincial colleges and institutes, which were transferred to the Ministry of Regional, Economic and Skills Development on 25 October 2010.

The Minister of Education, the Hon. Margaret MacDiarmid, was also named Minister responsible for Early Learning and Literacy on 10 June 2009. She retained the portfolio for Early Learning and Literacy when she moved from the Ministry of Education to the Minstry of  Tourism, Trade and Investment on 25 October 2010.
