of the full text of John Jessop's first report. This is a remarkably detailed
document. It offers an historical overview of the public system, a summary of
Jessop's philosophy of education, and critical assessments of schools on
Vancouver Island and the Mainland. The report contains the names and
qualifications of teachers, a list of authorized textbooks and a note on the
private and denominational schools then operating in the province.

School districts are the basic "building blocks" in the
public school system of B. C. This section provides a history and definition
of school districts and links to Web sites of present-day school
districts.
- Rural &
Assisted Schools, 1869 - 1946
Before the advent of large administrative
units in the late 1940s, British Columbia was a patchwork of small school
districts. Most districts consisted of a single "One Room School," classified
as "rural" or "assisted" schools. This section provides alphabetical and
chronological lists of every rural and assisted school gazetted (i.e.
officially authorized] in British Columbia. Over one thousand schools are
listed in this definitive listing.
